Beginings and Ends….

Beginings and Ends....

Of course right after I finish a post about my WIP’s and how I need to finish them before I start anything new, especially with the socks, I get in the mail my second installment of the Vintage Purls Summer Sock Club. Of course the pattern and the yarn is sooo stunning that I immediately had to cast-on!

I love these colours and I love that to socks don’t match instead are exact opposites! I did make some minor changes, I really, really hate garter stitch like really hate it so I replaced that with plain stockinette I have othe plans for the cuff to add texture just you wait and see! And it was kind of okay that I started this sock because of how these ones are looking.

Yep that’s the “sample socks” I really need a new name for these. I have about 4 or 5 rows till I start the ribbing which will be done lickety split. Most likely I will finish these tonight. My mind is already on which pair of sock I will start next and what pattern to do them in. these are the current options:

Knitsch(a new NZ dyer who also goes to my knit night) in pewter. I really like the feel and texture of this yarn and the colours are just well YUM! I’m not sure on what to knit with it though.

Fibro Fibers Nightfall yarn in blue, I love this yarn so very much it slowly fades from blue to black through out the 50g skein and is already wound into center pull balls. I have a design idea in store for this one but I’m not sure I’m ready to really sit down and hash it out maybe. Jen who runs Fibro fibers is amazing and I want 90% of her yarn I got this also in a bottle green and I want the deep purple and the aqua too. She also has denim and tomato coloursways that make my mouth water and I want to get them in the sock in enough to do a striped cardigan.

Yberry’s Street woman, this is just wow what a combo of colours none of which I actually like that much on their own but together just WOW!!!! This yarn just keeps nagging at me and telling me I should knit with it and I know that I should but what? Part of me thinks it needs to go back in the stash to be kept for later to be used in a shawl.

What do you think what should I cast-on? do you have a favorite toe up sock? comment and let me know

Crewel Fate

Crewel Fate

I’m constantly a late comer to all the new fads or in things. I have been since I was a child really, discovering Nirvana after Kurt’s death, finding Riot Grrrl as the scene was fading away. Some things it appears never change when my embroiderer’s guild decided to do a crewel work theme I shrugged and said “neat”. Each month as we were given two stitches to try out the dashing sampler, I filed the newsletters away without a thought. Crewel Work was too “hard” and mine would look “sloppy”. This thinking stayed like that in my brain gnawing away and my embroidery confidence, that is until recently.

Enter my fabulous Victorian black and white day out, gown that I’m working on for the Regional Workday that the guild is hosting. As I worked on the black duchess satin skirt i knew I wants white embellishments on it. originally it was going to be satin Celtic knots but alas my appliqué techniques are not what I would like them to be so I trashed that idea. Mulling through my brain I kept having this idea of surface stitchery specifically crewel work all along the front gore of the skirt. It had replaced the old “you can’t do that” gnawing with “you must do this” gnawing. So I grabbed some waste satin and some white crewel wool and headed off to the monthly social stitch-in. After sketching my design and staring at the tautly stretched fabric in my small hoop for longer then I’d like to say, finally had to admit I had no idea where to start. Son though with the quick help of Frances, Leslie and few questions of Penny I was on my way! By the time I was settling into bed two things had occurred.

1. I had finished delightful little sampler that had me convinced this was the right thing for my skirt.

2. I had fallen madly in love with Crewel work. Not only was it easy but I could do it and make it look good!

I got up at 7am th enext day because I was so excited about sketching out the design on my skirt, thank goodness it was with water soluble chalk because i had to have a couple of goes until I found something I was happy with. Next I machine stitched over my outline with black thread so I would easily be able to see what i was stitching without worrying that that the chalk had rubbed off.  and I started endless stem stitch.

One thing Became very clear really fast While I loved what I was doing if I did just this in white every night I would go absolutely batty VERY soon. I needed something for the pocket of my “work basket” apron that I’m also working on which will not only be for this outfit but for general use, thus can be in wonderful brilliant colour! So I needed a pattern, I checked my number one resource for andything the wonderful and magical GOOGLE! I found some lovely free patterns:

Like this amazing Jacobian scene that is awesome but way too big and not what I had envisioned.

Then there were these great table centers that were stunning but yet again not right for my needs.

After that I stumbled across this wealth of loveliness and there were some that were close but nothing that really called out to me yet.

Fell in love with this beautiful kit but alas I don’t have the time to wait for that now nor could I afford it.

Finally I found Needle N’ Threads a great blog by the very talented Mary Corbet who not only blogs about her beautiful embroidery and the processes in which they are made, but she also posts weekly patterns for free.  at first i found this beautiful design of a stylized pomegranate but it still didn’t feel right. I had the feeling tho this was the right track. Something in my head must have clicked with the pomegranate theme because I eventually found on her fabulous site this pattern which was just perfect! Interestingly enough i could have sworn there was another pattern similar to this one that I nearly considered, but I can’t find it.  Well anyway I grabbed some of the calico I’m making my apron from and traced the pattern(I really could have used a light box for this but c’est la vie) and away I went!

My Knitting List for 2010

So as I mentioned in the previous post I want to finish 12 things this year, they don’t all have to be UFO’s, some are things I have planned on knitting for years now. I was talking to My dear friend Toshi the other day that one of the shawls she liked was also on my “To Knit” list and she expressed interest in actually seeing the list so I thought I would post the list here for you all to read. I won’t hate myself if I don’t finish all of these but i would like to do some of them at least!

New Features

The longer I seem to have this blog the more I can see ways I can improve it. and so thus I have decided to start adding various features and will listen to requests.

Current Features:

Moved Blog – I moved my blog to the main url and am working on a redirect of the old url please if you have me on your links page please update these. and part of this move I have changed my blogs name to simply “Brooklynne Michelle”. The rest of my pages should be up soon too. P.S. this means you also need to update your feed please do that.

Patterns – I have been doing a lot of knitting over the years and I would say that over the past three years 92% of my projects have been of my own design. I like to think that these designs are rather cool and nifty so I have started offering my patterns online right now there is only one sock pattern and it’s for sale but in the future I will also include free patterns. If you have any questions please let me know via the new contact me button.

Sponsors – I have added a sponsors page. This is a page where I will link to people who are rather rad and sponsor this blog in some way. I though about this for a long time and decided that I wanted to make a seperate page for these instead of putting this on the front page. If you want be a sponsor for this blog please contact me.

Theme – I have changed the theme a lot these past few days looking for the right theme. I’m not sure I have found the theme I’m looking for so please bear with me while I continue to find the one I find perfect.

Future Features:

Made Mondays - I am going to start a weekly feature where I review handmade/indie craft and other things along those lines. I plan on starting it this next monday. I hope you like it and if your somone who thinks that a product of yours would fit this section feel free to yet again contact me!

Handspun – I have been spinning a lot recently and part of this means that I have ben spinning things that aren’t quiet my thing thus in the future there will be some of my handspun yarn for sale.

So those are the things that are coming up over here at chez Brooklynne I hope your as excited as I am.

And the Test Knitter Talks.

Today I got and email from Denise over at Geek and Lawyer (she was one of my test knitters) she’s completed one of the Around the World Socks. We talked about the pattern a bit and what should be changed and fixed and so I should have the pattern done soon. What’s that you say you want pictures? Well I will give you some pictures!

Denise knit the sock with Lincraft’s Merino Crepe 5ply and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
