Passing on The Past Time!

Ryan Learning To Knit!

Since I moved here in October(and actually for several months before hand) I kept telling Ryan, “I’m going to get you knitting” or whenever he’d laugh at my knitting craziness “just wait till your start knitting, who will be laughing then?” Well that day has come! I knew he would be keen to knit seeing as he already sews and embroiders, and comes from a long family of fibery crafters. His Grandma used to spin wool for socks which she knit for the whole family. Now there was one small hitch in this plan, I knit funny. There I said it I knit funny, actually backwards to be completely honest. Now since i have knit like this for over 16 years I have learned to adapt patterns and knowing lace and such is going to be backwards but it was hard at first, so I didn’t want to teach anyone else an odd way of knitting. So I waited patiently for a time when he wanted to goto my Monday night knitting group with me. Well last Monday was the day, and he took to it like a fish to water!

More of Ryan Knitting

So now he has had to deal with me chasing him around the (very small)house with my camera, urging him to let me take a picture while he knits. As you can see I prevailed and he pulled faces! It’s all very interesting having a hobby that you can do with your partner, I really enjoy it. I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful it is to sit next to your partner on the (way to small)couch and both knit while watching The Simpsons(even if it means that our elbows are constantly hitting each other).

In other news I treated myself to a new blog theme in response to upgrading my wordpress to 2.5, which I’m really liking. They have fixed a lot of the bugs and issues that really bothered me before. They also made it easier to upload your pictures to your actual server and blog post. The old way was just so frustrating at times that I often found myself either not blogging , or choosing to use flickr(which is just bad practice). The theme isn’t perfect and you will probably see some change in the near future, but I’m getting there.

I want to do a tutorial within the next week about steeks, seeing as everyone seems to be really panicy about them.. so keep your eye’s peeled out for that.

I leave you now with this final picture of Ryan. This was after several pictures and he kept screwing up due to ya know a flash in his eyes, and  me moving around him like the paparazzi at  The Beverly Hills plastic surgery clinic!

Pieces

fabric for a quilt

Lately I have been thinking a lot about quilting, so I went out and bought these two fabrics to start off with to make a quilt I think I may get two more colors maybe a nice dark blue and maybe a black I’m not sure nor am I sure what kind of quilt I am going to make but it’s gonna be cool! I like the idea of quilting and haven’t done one before but I am hopeful. I like the idea of putting something together piece by piece and it making this large item that can last generations… I want to use a wool batting for inside the quilt so that it will be nice and warm in the winter…I knit you know that right? I don’t always talk about it but I do knit! what am I working on right now well let’s see…

Old Navy Shawl

First we have a a simple triangle shawl that I’m knitting on on US5 needles with some thick and thin super soft cotton yarn that I rescued from a tragic Old Navy sweater that my mum got me for the holiday two years ago. It was always too big and would fall off since it was a scoop necked sweater after about a hour the neck band would have slid down my shoulders and be at my finger tips. It just wasn’t good. But I LOVED the yarn and the feel of it… So I sat down a week ago and carefully undid all of the seams and unraveled the whole thing, leaving me with three large balls of yarn and one medium ball of yarn, thanks to the front, back, and each sleeve being one solid piece of yarn, and then the wide ribbed neckband, so I definitely have enough for this shawl and maybe even enough when I’m done for a loose knit tank top.

Ryan's Black and White Socks 1

Then I have socks, this is Lorna’s Laces pin stripe I believe or something like that anyway. I have been “making” Ryan socks for a little over three years but something always happens… well not this time! I’m going to knit them and finish them, this is sock number one, and I have been working on it for awhile but It doesn’t get a whole heck of a lot of work done since it sits on my desk and i have been working a lot lately! The heel is my own modified short row heel.

Top Down Cardi

Finally we have my new top down cardigan made of Touch Yarn’s merino… Sooo soft this is a new Zealand yarn company and their yarns are just beautiful, especially their possum merino blend. I know many Americans are prolly reading this and thinking “ewww opossums” but this is a different animal to the American Opossu, this is a soft cuddly creature… imagine cashmere and alpaca blended together and thats possum! This sweater is made using the top down raglan sweater wheel. very simple…Well I want to get back to knitting and I’m sure you do too I will hopefully continue to update frequently… talk to ya all laters

head bands(now with pictures)

I’ve been knitting heand bands to keep my hair out of my face. Its at that stage where my bangs are always in my face….. And I wanted a cute headband….

So since I ripped out the wedgewood blouse(hate the was noro’s unevenness makes my knitting look uneven) so I’ve decided now that my hairs red and I have a bunch of green apple coloured yarn I shall have headbands I’ve knit three basic headbands from the following pattern *edit* I created a seperate blog to put patterns in ill put it in the side bar, but that link will also take it to it*/edit*

So now that I have three of these that are almost identical(I made one wider and one just 6 stitches wide) I decided I wanted one a lil defferent from any other headband so I’m working on a head band that will wrap around my head several times like women in ancient greece used to wear hopefully it will look decent
